In Cambridgeshire the gentle flow of our waterways is once again graced by the presence of enchanting water voles. Thanks to our dedicated efforts, we've nearly managed to eradicate the invasive American mink population. During the previous 30 years mink predated over 90% of our water voles, but now these precious creatures can flourish once more. Our work is not yet over but funding the last push is facing a threat.

Why We Need Your Support

To ensure the continued success of this vital conservation project, we must remain vigilant. Following monumental efforts by conservation officer Vince Lea and project officer (Cambridgeshire) Emily Coleman, in conjunction with around 100 volunteers and other organisations, the CRT has helped achieve success with the Waterlife Recovery East trial to eradicate invasive American mink. We have removed over 200 mink in the last three years, and estimate fewer than 10 remain. Our commitment is unwavering, but sustaining this effort requires financial support.

Water voles, often affectionately referred to as "water rats" are small semi-aquatic rodents native to Britain. Recognised for their endearing appearance with plump bodies, short legs, and furry tails, water voles are iconic inhabitants of rivers, streams, and marshlands. They spend much of their lives close to water, using their adept swimming and diving skills to forage for food and evade predators. With a diet primarily consisting of grasses, sedges, and aquatic plants, water voles play a vital role in shaping their riparian habitats and supporting diverse ecosystems.
