A stunning day to enjoy a centuries-old woodland For one special day each year, we open the beautiful Margaret Wood in Upper Denby, Yorkshire, for visitors to experience its breathtaking carpet of bluebells- and this year’s event was one to remember. On May 2, we welcomed an even larger crowd than last year, with a wonderfully warm, family-friendly atmosphere throughout the day. Leslie Hackett, our Head of Volunteering, said: “It was great to see such a diverse mix of visitors, all clearly enjoying the space. “Many people commented on how grateful they were to be able to access the woodland, especially as it’s the only day of the year the public can visit, and that really showed in the generosity of donations, which totalled more than £500 (double last year). We’ve also had new volunteers sign up already.” New this year, we had a wonderful selection of craft stalls for people to enjoy, including Wish & Believe, Perfectly Pretty Florals, Pet Portraits, For the Love of Wellies, Woodsmiths Family Business, Bruce’s Bright Ideas, Thomdie Boxers & Services and Temple Spa Wendy Jane. Sven Shale, The Owlman of Stocksbridge, was also at the event, showing people the owls they could expect to see in Margaret Wood. The bluebells were absolutely stunning at their peak, just before they begin to go over. “We had so many positive comments, with several visitors saying they were the best bluebells they’d ever seen,” added Leslie. “The weather couldn’t have worked out better either. There was a nice happy buzz about the place. “A big thank you to our volunteers who helped the day runs smoothly, serving tea and cakes and acting as rangers and guides in the woodland and helping to answer any visitor questions.” Edward Noble working hard to get the woods ready for the open day Beautiful bluebells at Margaret Wood Margaret Wood at Upper Denby Edward Noble, the CRT’s contractor, has looked after the site for more than 30 years. The CRT was gifted Margaret Wood in a legacy donation from Mr Duncan Elliot in 2001 and Mr Noble continued to work for the woodland, establishing good habitats for wildlife and allowing the bluebells to thrive. “It was one of the best open days we have ever had. The bluebells are the best I have ever seen them and I have been looking after the woods for 30 years," said Mr Noble. "Since the beginning of February, I have nearly lived in the wood getting it ready. We had so much dead wood which blew off in the winter and if you do not pick up all the dead wood before the bluebells come into bud, they won’t come up. Two thirds of that wood, I have gone over every square foot and it’s paid off.” Alison Brook, our grazier at Margaret Wood, who also ran her stall, For the Love of Wellies, at the event, said: “We had a great turn out and the woodland looked stunning and the smell is incredible. One person said he has visited all round the world and this is one of his top three places he felt he could relax and be himself.” You can help us do more: Volunteer with the CRT and get hands-on with conservation work Donate to support habitat restoration across our farms Join us as a Friend and help secure the future of nature-friendly farming Join Events Volunteer News Published: May, 2026.
